As a Palliative Care Physician, I have been looking after patients who have limited time at hand. Many a times, I have become a “partner in caregiving” with their family members. Being a caregiver myself to my grandmother many years back, and although I am a doctor, I feel that there were many things where I too needed help. First, I never knew that I can ask for help. Second, I felt helpless to answer few direct questions posed by my grandmother and family members which were related to life and death. To be able to tell the truth requires great courage. What helps family members to sail through this difficult phase of their life is the support of other family members and friends. This support helps them to make certain complex decisions, and stand by it. With more and more nuclear families in urban settings, there is even more need to have such support networks. Connecttocare is a platform, we are starting today on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. We hope that as the meaning of Akshaya is “never diminishing”, this support group always keep helping family caregivers in their tough times.
